The BSD.lv Project Developed in Latvia

The BSD.lv Project

The BSD.lv Project is a portal of free and open source software projects developed and maintained in the Republic of Latvia. Most but not all of its projects are BSD-licensed in respect to the scientific heritage and business-friendliness of the BSD license. The bsd.lv site began serving cvsup mirrors in 2004 and original projects in 2006.

BSD

BSD refers to the Berkeley Software Distribution copyright, a permissive license associated with software first published by the Computer Systems Research Group of the University of California, Berkeley in 1977.

The key stipulations of the BSD family of licenses are:

  • The software may be freely modified and redistributed as long as it preserves the original author’s copyright
  • The software is provided without warranty

Open Source in Latvia

Founded in 2002 by the members of the Latvian Localisation Team, the Latvian Open Source Association or LAKA is the longest-running public proponent of free and open source software in Latvia. In 2005, the University of Latvia Linux Centre joined the community and provides an essential home to the Localisation efforts that inspired LAKA while providing other open source support and development services.

Latvia is rich with free and open source software use and development but often in the face of political and financial challenges. This site exists to promote and support those free and open source efforts in Latvia that are unencumbered by organized discouragement.
